I’ll be frank. I was nervous. Not about Five in a Bar singing. That is always a pleasure. Nor was there a book shortage. Miranda had rescued hundreds when Woodbridge School was redesigning its library. The worry was scones — plain scones — and the Talk about the Barn, which would not be given by an expert.
But the Spirit of Snape (and Blaxhall) flew in. Thank you, Friends and neighbours, for adding books and providing featherlight scones — including cheese, fruit and non-gluten, all so deftly served by Chris and Caroline. And thanks to Andrew Salisbury for expert parking guidance and use of his hi-viz.
As for the Talk, Miranda discovered that she knew about her own barn, the indefatigable Shane Pictor came up with printouts and I swotted. Our reward was an attentive audience and fascinating contributions from a Historic England architect, a carpenter who knew her woodwork history, and a millwright from Lincolnshire who had been walking past that very afternoon and seen the poster at the top of the lane.
£315 was raised — all towards the repair and maintenance of Snape Church. We hope the soffit will be fixed for the winter.
